Aeroponic hemp: how growing in air saves water and speeds up harvests

Young hemp plants growing aeroponically in a bright grow room with misting nozzles overhead

Picture a hemp plant with its roots hanging in the air, misted with water and nutrients a few seconds at a time. That is aeroponics, and it is a big part of how we think about growing hemp responsibly.

What is aeroponic hemp growing?

In a traditional field, roots push through soil to find water and nutrients. In an aeroponic system, plants are held up so their roots hang freely in a chamber, where a fine mist feeds them directly. There is no soil, which means fewer places for contaminants to hide and much more control over what the plant takes in.

How aeroponics recycles water: plants that "sweat"

All plants release water vapor through tiny pores in their leaves. It is called transpiration, and you can think of it as the plant sweating. Outdoors, that water simply drifts away.

In a closed aeroponic grow room, that moisture is captured from the air, filtered and returned to the system. Water the plants have already used gets used again, so far less is wasted.

Faster hemp harvests: weeks, not months

Because the mist feeds the roots directly, growers can fine-tune the nutrition in every spray for each stage of the plant's life. With that level of control, an aeroponic hemp crop can be ready in about 8 weeks, compared with roughly 8 months for a traditional outdoor season. Faster cycles mean more harvests a year from the same space, with the same recycled water.

Why it matters

  • Water reuse. A closed loop recycles moisture that open-field growing loses to the air.
  • Clean inputs. No soil means growers control exactly what reaches the roots.
  • Consistency. Steady light, air and mist help plants grow evenly from harvest to harvest.
  • Faster harvests. Tuned mist nutrition can bring a crop in in about 8 weeks instead of 8 months.
  • Year-round growing. Indoor systems don't depend on the weather or the season.

From plant to bottle

Clean, consistent plants make for a better starting point. From there, our gentle, low-temperature extraction ([read how it works](/journal/how-cold-extraction-works)) protects the plant's naturally occurring compounds, and every batch is checked by an independent lab.
